Next stop

Today we flew to Luke's province and had a free day to explore. It ended up being an adventure in culture and food. We decided to try a local restaurant for lunch but quickly learned that we could not read the menu! Luckily there were pictures! Ordering was an adventure as we tried to communicate what we wanted. I accidentally talked Laura into a very spicy noodle dish. (She could only eat a small amount.) In my defense, the picture looked good! We also realized that kids and some locals are fascinated with Americans. If you are on Asian social networks you will probably see us trying to use chopsticks and shopping! It takes you by surprise at first but is fun. For dinner we decided to stay in and order room service for convenience. However, when Laura called she was greeted with a friendly "no English on this line." So, I made my way to the front desk to order using our crude but effective system of pointing. I decided on a burger and Laura got a vegetarian burger (which we found out means a fried egg on a hamburger bun).

As we get ready for bed we are filled with excitement about seeing our son again tomorrow. It will be a hard day for him as he will say goodbye to one of his favorite caretakers and go home with us (people he has only met for a few hours).

  1. Too funny. I warned Laura about "laowai" in certain places in China. It is out of love and curiosity. She should asked them "our company buys private brands that are made here".
